Carambolim Lake is situated approximately two kilometers southeast of Old Goa in the Tiswadi taluka. It supports a large population of birds like egrets, ospreys, eagles and kingfishers. Carambolim Lake is a man made freshwater lake that was originally built to facilitate irrigation of the nearby fields. The lake is a bird-watcher's paradise since a variety of migratory birds visit this lake every year.
The level of the lake is determined not only by the rains, but also by the local community. It is used as a reservoir for the paddy fields to the south of it. During, late February and March the water leaves in the lake are low and it looks like a large green lawn. The plants which are growing very fast is a threat to the lake. In the morning the east site of the lake is best for birdwatching. There is a footpath here and some wonderful big trees providing ample shade. The embankment to the south provides a good view. From here the paddy fields can also be viewed.
